1. Facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity
Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments.
a. Promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness
b. Engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources
c. Promote student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify students’ conceptual understanding and thinking, planning, and creative processes
d. Model collaborative knowledge construction by engaging in learning with students, colleagues, and others in face-to-face and virtual environments
My Progress Towards This Standard:
Evidence 1: EDpuzzle
In my EDpuzzle, I took a video I had created on WeVideo, and improvement by implementing questions that students could answer during the video. The video would be playing and randomly EDpuzzle would pop up with a question I developed for the students to answer. My video was on derivative rules that incorporate questions that for example asked the students to tell me the difference to the two rules. I could then see who watched the video, who answered the video and what their answers were. This EDpuzzle helped promote collaboration between students and teachers. This tool satisfies 1b, 1c and 1d. EDpuzzle has a variety of videos to choose from, so teachers can assign videos that discuss real world problems and by adding questions throughout the video, students are being forced to show their conceptual thinking behind the video or problem. Becuase they are able to show their thinking process the teacher is better abled to collaborate with the student because the teacher understands how the student thinks and learns better. This video also doesn't have to be a video that the teacher finds of another instructor, EDpuzzle allows teachers to upload their own material. If teachers choose this route they will create a more engagaing and interactive video for their students to communicate to their teachers with.
Evidence 2: Word Cloud
Word cloud is a tool I have been using since I was in elementary school. The website name to create word cloud is called Wordle. Wordle is a site where anyone can created word clouds from the text you provide. You can also connect Wordle to a website, and it will generate all the most used words from the site. This tool satisfies 1a and 1b. This tool is a great creative outlet for students to use when learning in class. Students can put their own words into the Wordle and create their own creations when doing a certain project. This is also a great tool for real world problems. When students look up articles concerning major topics in our world today, they can link it to Wordle and see what are the major topics that constantly occur in the article.
Evidence 3: Inspiration
This is a tool I used at the begining of the W200 class, and I thought it was very educational. There are two versions, Kidspiration and Inspiration. Inspiration is the tool I chose to use and it was a way for students to creat concept maps, webs, etc. by using different shapes, colors and images. I created my inspiration concept map in relation to learning limits in Calculus. This tool satisfies 1a, 1b, and 1c. This tool is a great creative outlet because there is no template and students have all the freedom in the world when it comes to designing a image to represent their topic. Students are encouraged to have fun when designing their concept map. This tool can also work with real world problems becuase students can create a cause and effect chain between real world events. If students were doing a report on global warming, they would be able to show all the leading causes to why our world is at the state it is. This tool also shows the step-by-step process of the thinking in the student's minds. A concept map or web has to be shown step-by-step and by making students work with this program, teachers are able to see what the student thinks, why the student thinks that and what technology tool will help them learn best.
2. Design and develop digital age learning experiences and assessments
Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessments incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the Standards•S.
a. Design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity
b. Develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable all students to pursue their individual curiosities and become active participants in setting their own educational goals, managing their own learning, and assessing their own progress
c. Customize and personalize learning activities to address students’ diverse learning styles, working strategies, and abilities using digital tools and resources
d. Provide students with multiple and varied formative and summative assessments aligned with content and technology standards, and use resulting data to inform learning and teaching
Evidence 1: MathTalk
I found this tool through one of my class prep assignments in my W200 course. MathTalk is an innovative tool that allows students to talk through the math equation, and as the students are doing so the program is registering the words and writing it down on the screen for the student. This is a great tool in speech recognition mathematics and it accomodates for students who might not be the best at writing or get distracted while doing the problem with a regular paper and penci. This tool satisfies 2a and 2c. This can easily be done on paper and pencil, but this tool differentiates for certain students and allows them to write whatever they want onto the screen. They have the creative power to create graphs, equations, etc. Like I have said before throughout this entire portfolio, students learn differently and this tool personalizes learning activities for students who learn differently and need this tool to show people that they do know the material they just couldn't express it before. This addresses a lot of learning styles and should be incorporated.
Evidence 2: Plickers
Plickers is an app that teachers can use for assesments. How it works is students have a piece of paper that turn a certain way is either A, B, C or D. Teachers then take either their smart phone or iPad and scan the room, receieving everyone's answers. The teacher can see who got which answer right and what the class as a whole got right. This satisfies 2a, 2c and 2d. Students are able to abandon the simple raising hands and only one person gets to answer, for a much more interactive and engaging tool that allows students to see themselves get scanned and see how the class did in answering the question. This also helps students who are more shy in class and don't want to be singled out particiapte in class. Not every student is outgoing and this diveristy is solved with Plickers. Students don't see who specifically got the answer right, only the teacher, and all students raise their sheets of paper at once so nobody has to feel as if they're on the spot. This tool is also a great formative assessment. Teachers get instant feedback that was both fun for the students and not time consuming for the teacher. This also doesn't require students to have devices so it saves the school a lot of money.
Evidence 3: Quizlet
Quizlet is how I have personally been studying since I was in the sixth grade. Quizlet is a tool where anyone can either look up or create a set of flashcards to help them study. Once a student has picked a set of flashcards, they can chose which game, that Quizlet provides, they want to play to help them study. I created a flashcard deck for my service learning project. My teacher needed a more technology integrated lesson on exponential growth with a real world application of mortgages. So I created a deck of cards that incorporated the terms needed to know. This tool satisfies 2a, 2b, 2c, 2d. This tool takes a normal project of creating paper flashcards into a much more effective way of studying. There are numerous games for students to pick from so they constantly have ways to keep quizing themselves. This is also a more loosely built site, so students can be more involved in their own learning. Students get to decide what games to play, how long they want to play and if they need to study certain cards more than others. This is one giant assesment that students can constantly get feeback from. Quizlet will tell students when they're wrong and give hints when tyring to help guide the students in the right direction.
3. Model digital age work and learning
Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in a global and digital society.
a. Demonstrate fluency in technology systems and the transfer of current knowledge to new technologies and situations
b. Collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members using digital tools and resources to support student success and innovation
c. Communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital age media and formats
d. Model and facilitate effective use of current and emerging digital tools to locate, analyze, evaluate, and use information resources to support research and learning
Evidence 1: Smore
Smore is an online site that helps people create flyers. I used this tool when I was designing a welcome back flyer for my calculus class on my teacher website. The tool was very easy to use and didn't take much time to get the hang of how to use all the different tools. I could then, if I actually had a class, send out the flyers to them and their parents. People can also follow me and get updates whenver I created a new flyer. This tool satisfies 3a, 3b, 3c and 3d. This tool can be more than just flyers but it can also be used as a student guide for students because they have some material they learned in class on a flyer and shared with everyone in the class so they can all study the same material together. This is also a great tool to connect with teachers and parents. If parents and other teachers follow your profile, you will be able to contact them and create a connection with them. This also removes the problem of students taking home important information and forgetting to give it to their parents. This also can be used for you and your students to follow people who post flyers about current research and other class related topics. This is a widely used tool and should be used in schools for all its convenient resources.
Evidence 2: Personal Learning Network
I have learned a lot about personal learning networks and I believe twitter is a great one for teachers. Several teachers in the past have gotten in touch with students after school by tweeting out important information, retweeting breaking news and reminding students of due dates and test dates. I created a twitter timeline using Storify, and it was a giant contemplation of education news, stem learning updates, etc. I found it very useful because it was all of my important topics in education in one spot for me to read and research on. This tool satisfies 3a, 3b, 3c and 3d. This is a tool that is very consistent on reporting about what is happening in the education world, and it connects teachers that normally would've never met giving them the chance to learn from each other and see what really works in the classroom. This tool is very helpful for parents as well. Parents can have twitters and can follow their students teachers to see what the child should be working, and to be more involved with the subject their child is learning. Besides this tool helping teachers get information out to students and parents, this is a great site for teachers to see what research is being conducted, what's the progress and what are the shocking new changes in education. There are so many outlets twitter can reach, so I would love to use this tool in my future classroom.
Evidence 3: Screencast
I used screencast when I was creating a review of a website called Khan Academy. The screencast records a video of whatever is on my screen with my voice talking in the background. I can use this tool to give a lesson to a class, demonstrate a tool I'm going to use in class, etc. This tool satisfies 3a and 3d. This tool can demonstrate the fluency in technology systems and the transfer of current knowledge to new technologies becuase I was communicating to my students the content of the site and how to work around it. This method of learning is also somthing that would be found in a online learning environment. I could use screencast to do some lesson completely online so that I can spend more time on the harder subjects in class where it is more of a face-to-face communication. This tool can help show students different resources wherever they are, and they never have to worry about forgetting the material becuase it will always be online. They always have a link to the resources.
4. Promote and model digital citizenship and responsibility
Teachers understand local and global societal issues and responsibilities in an evolving digital culture and exhibit legal and ethical behavior in their professional practices.
a. Advocate, model, and teach safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology, including respect for copyright, intellectual property, and the appropriate documentation of sources
b. Address the diverse needs of all learners by using learner-centered strategies providing equitable access to appropriate digital tools and resources
c. Promote and model digital etiquette and responsible social interactions related to the use of technology and information
d. Develop and model cultural understanding and global awareness by engaging with colleagues and students of other cultures using digital age communication and collaboration tools
Evidence 1: Piktochart
Piktochart is a great inforgraphic creator. It incorporates a very easy drop and drag method that any student could pick up very quickly. I created a cyberbullying awareness inforgraphic using this tool and it had all of the different causes, graphs to explain the proportion of the population who are bulllied and more. This tool satisfies 4a, 4b, 4c and 4d. Students, parents, teachers, anybody can use this tool to promote the safety rules behind using technology, can embed links to resources that help answer questions about internet safety and can show videos and how to properly act around the internet. Students can share these infographics on different sites, so they are able to spread awareness about the certain topics of being safe on the internet.
Evidence 2: Prezi
Prezi is a much more interactive and enagaging presentation tool than powerpoint. Prezi lets presenters go in depth to a topic by creating slides inside of slides. For my service learning project I had to create a Prezi for Mr. McGee and his calculus class. I created one that dealt with the topic of different interests and an example problem of a simple interest equation. I used the different slides to show the students the step by step process of the material. This tool can also be used for internet safety and digital issues. This tool satisfies 4a, 4b, 4c and 4d. Teachers can use this presentation method to promote and advocate for internet safety and promote a more cultural understanding for students. Teachers can present on anything, and it will be really engaging for students so the Prezi will keep their attention and thus the information will most likely be absorbed. This is why a Pezi is so effective for this standard. Teachers can present on digital etiquette and students who are more visual learners benefit from a technology tool that accomodates to their needs.
Evidence 3: Shadow Puppet
Shadow Puppet is a tool where teachers can get the app an upload pictures from their photo library and create a stroy out of them. The teacher is the voice over while the pictures flip through explaining the story or topic for the students. I created a story using Shadow Puppets that talked about an exponential growth word problem for my students to figure out. This tool satisfies 4a, 4b, 4c and 4d. Teachers can break students up into groups and have each group create a story using this tool that deals with a different topic on internet safety or etiquette. This tool is also a good tool for differentiation in technology. For students who rather not speak can tell a story threw pictures and those who are not the best writers can demonstrate their story through words. This tool can also be used to have students collaborate together to create a good story. This tool helps students work on theri communication skills and cultural awareness.
5. Engage in professional growth and leadership
Teachers continuously improve their professional practice, model lifelong learning, and exhibit leadership in their school and professional community by promoting and demonstrating the effective use of digital tools and resources.
a. Participate in local and global learning communities to explore creative applications of technology to improve student learning
b. Exhibit leadership by demonstrating a vision of technology infusion, participating in shared decision making and community building, and developing the leadership and technology skills of others
c. Evaluate and reflect on current research and professional practice on a regular basis to make effective use of existing and emerging digital tools and resources in support of student learning
d. Contribute to the effectiveness, vitality, and self-renewal of the teaching profession and of their school and community
Evidence 1: Personal Learning Network
This is another personal learning network, although it is not twitter again. In my W200 class, we learned about all these amazing and informative screencasts, vidcasts, popcasts, etc. I came across one vidcast called TED talks. These TED talks describe this standard perfeectly. People talk at different conventions about a variety of subjects and then the videos are posted online for people to watch and talk about. This tool satisfies 5a, 5b, 5c and 5d. These talks are constantly talking about new tools, how we can incorporate technology into the classroom, what works in the classroom, what doesnt, etc. These talks not only get talked about in online chatrooms, but also by colleagues in the school. Teachers are inspired to share ideas and work together to create something they heard about in a TED talk in the classroom. There are many other casts as well that all cover relevant and recent topics on research projects and what technology tool should be evaluated more. These personal learning networks are constantly changing and expanding so that the teaching profession stays in touch with the way the world is changing. It creates a community of educators who are looking to see how a cutting edge technology device can help a student learn.
Evidence 2: E-Portfolio
This website is a perfect example of this standard. I created this website with my different creations using new technology tools and furthering my knowledge of technology in the classroom. I created this site to get in touch with teachers and other administrators. I am able to show that I have grown as a professional educator and that I can specify what tools would benefit the students the most. This tool satisfies 5a, 5b, 5c and 5d. I am able to connect with other teachers, and although I have my own ideas that show people I am a leader in the technology field I do have an online community that I can work with to come up with new revoluntionary lesson plans that integrate technology devices constantly. This site will also help future teachers stay updated on the world of technology tools becuase by the time I am graduating college, there will be more tools to learn and incorporate into the teaching profession.
Evidence 3: Teacher Website
My last evidence is my teacher website. On my teacher website I incorporated way more tools than this e-portoflio. I have ways for parents to be involved and more connected to their students learning experience. Parents are able to see what is due in the class that week, what my expectations for the students are and what they will be learning in class. This connection with the class is important for parents becuase it includes them in the learning. This tool satisfies 5a, 5b, 5c and 5d. There is a community of the classroom created through this website, and every page is me being a leader in this class showing them what they will be learning through different technology tools. Becuase I am leading this classroom community, I have different tools that can be used for certain lessons throughout the year in the classroom. This shows my effectivness and self renewal because I have a variety of different tools that accomodate to all students and their different types of learning.
